OrganOx CTO and co-founder Prof. Constantin Coussios elected Fellow of the UK’s Academy of Medical Sciences
Prof. Constantin Coussios OBE FREng FMedSci has been elected as a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences, the UK’s counterpart to the US’s National Academy of Medicine. In 2018, he was elected as a member of the Royal Academy of Engineering, the UK’s counterpart to the National Academy of Engineering, and awarded an OBE for services to biomedical engineering in 2022.
Working with transplant surgeon Professor Peter Friend FMedSci over the past 25 years, he co-founded OrganOx in 2008, developing the world’s first normothermic liver perfusion device, the metra®, for improved organ preservation. To date, the metra® has been used to enable over 4,000 liver transplants globally, to eradicate night-time operations, and to achieve improved outcomes for transplant patients.
In addition, Professor Coussios is leading the development of the world’s first automated kidney perfusion device capable of extended automated normothermic kidney perfusion prior to transplantation, including the successful completion of a first-in-human 36-patient clinical trial using kidneys that had been outside the body for up to 36 hours. The trial was supported by the UK’s National Institute for Health Research in collaboration with the University of Oxford.
